5 How to Configure Trancy Extension
Once you’ve got Trancy installed, your first step is to click on the Trancy icon in your browser. It’s a good idea to create an account, especially since it’s free and quick, especially if you have a Gmail account. While you can use Trancy as a guest, having an account unlocks more features.
After setting up your account, go to the Word Translation settings.
Here, you can enable or disable word/sentence translation and Automatic Pronunciation. The Automatic Pronunciation feature is quite handy – when activated and you translate a word, Trancy will automatically pronounce it for you.
In the same area, you can choose how you want to translate a word or sentence. You could opt for manual selection and click the Trancy icon, or use the ‘select text + Alt’ shortcut for automatic translation. There’s also a direct translation option that brings up the translation popup as soon as you select text.
Next feature is the Immersive Translation.
Within this feature, you can enable or disable full-page translations.
Another cool feature is the New Word Style, where you can choose how to highlight new words that you’ve saved as favorites. This could be underlining, bolding, changing opacity, or color-coding.
Personally, I don’t use text highlighting much, as it can clutter my screen, especially when reading lots of online content. But if it works for you, you can pick a highlight color that stands out from the usual hyperlink colors.
For your learning language and translation language, you can select your preferred language. At the time of writing this article, the options might be somewhat limited. The Theme Settings allow you to change the background color of Trancy’s pop-up.
Lastly, there’s the Choose Voice option for pronunciation. In the free plan, you get one default AI voice, but if you want more variety, you might consider the paid plan.
6 How to Use Trancy Extension
Since Trancy can be used in various scenarios, covering them all would be extensive. Therefore, we’ll focus on two primary uses: web pages and YouTube. The approach for other video content is similar to our YouTube use case, and for text pages, the same principles apply as with web pages.
Using Trancy on Web Pages
After you’ve got everything set up and Trancy is well-configured, using it on web pages is straightforward. When you encounter a complex term, simply select it in the way you’ve configured. In my setup, selecting the text brings up Trancy’s small icon.
Clicking on this icon triggers a translation pop-up. This pop-up allows you to hear the word’s pronunciation, save it for later, or delve into the definition feature.
The definition feature provides a new pop-up with the word used in different scenarios, including its synonyms and inflections. It’s a comprehensive way to understand and remember new terms.
Using Trancy on YouTube
For YouTube videos, you’ll find the Trancy icon near the Full Screen button. Clicking on this icon opens Trancy’s interface, which offers features similar to the web page use, plus additional translation options for videos. You can customize how you interact with the subtitles that appear while the video is running.
The subtitles will be displayed in the language you’ve selected, allowing for an immersive language-learning experience while watching your favorite videos. This feature is particularly useful for enhancing listening comprehension and getting used to the pronunciation and rhythm of the new language.
7 Personal Opinion on Trancy Extension
After spending some time with Trancy, I’ve developed a pretty clear perspective on its value, especially as I’m learning languages like English and French.
First off, pronunciation is a common challenge for learners of a new language. While text translation tools have been around for a while, Trancy’s ability to provide correct pronunciations directly within the context of the text you’re reading or the video you’re watching is extremely helpful. This feature stands out because it makes learning pronunciation more convenient and integrated into the learning process.
Moreover, the feature of saving words is particularly beneficial. When you come across these saved words again and they’re highlighted, it triggers a recall of their definitions. This repeated exposure and reinforcement help in committing these words to long-term memory, which is a key aspect of language learning.
Lastly, the fact that Trancy is free and, at the time of writing this article, does not limit its free features, adds to its appeal.
When compared to other AI language learning tools that might be less effective and more expensive, Trancy definitely holds its ground as a valuable resource for language learners.
